Apprenticeship FAQ’s
There are different rates of pay for apprentices depending on your age and what year of your apprenticeship you’re in.
Your employment contract should confirm your rate of pay
- Apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over in their first year: The minimum wage is now £7.55 per hour.
- Apprentices aged 19 or 20 in their second year or later: They will be paid the rate applicable to their age, which is £10.00 per hour from April 1, 2025.
- Apprentices aged 21 or over in their second year or later: They will be paid the National Living Wage, which is £12.21 per hour from April 1, 2025
In England, apprenticeships are available to individuals aged 16 and older, with no upper age limit.
You must be living in England and not in full-time education. You need to secure a job with an employer offering apprenticeships. Entry requirements and eligibility vary by apprenticeship type. Some may require specific qualifications. Check your right to work in the UK if you’re not a UK or EU citizen.
